By kscarbel2June 22, in Trucking News. Cummins is recalling nearly 5, heavy-duty diesel truck engines due to an electrical issue. The recall affects ISX12 and ISX15 engines produced between March 7 and April 12 because of possible water infiltration in the engine control module connector.
A blown fuse would cause the engine to stall without warning and not restart until the control module and fuse are replaced, according to NHTSA. The recall is expected to begin on July 7. The recall will specifically address a defect with the engine control module that may develop an internal electrical short circuit, possibly resulting in the engine stalling without warning, according to the NHTSA recall notice.
Cummins will be notifying the owners of the trucks, and dealers will replace the existing ECM with a new one, free of charge. Long story short, got her to Cummins in Las Vegas, where they tore it apart and found that a "screw" -- "one of two" -- had fallen out of something that connects the rod to the crankshaft.
The tech showed me the Cummins online catalog of parts, but he went so fast I missed half of it. It doesn't appear as if there was anything I could have done to prevent it. He said in nine years he has seen two similar events. But I would like to find a picture of this part for my own education. They have ordered a "short block" and are rebuilding the engine. Doesn't appear as if there was anything I could have done to prevent it. He said in 9 years he has seen 2 similar events. Though, clearly there other causes of engine failure, this is one that does affect the Cummins ISL. As my granddaughter would say, "Ewww. There is indeed nothing you could have done to prevent this assuming that your engine had oil!
In terms of a blow-up diagram of your engine, you may not be able to find something specific to the Cummins ISL but you could look for a blow up of any kind of gasoline or diesel engine. The rod is connected to the crankshaft with a u-shaped piece that completes a circle around the crankshaft. This u-shaped piece I don't know its proper name is held in place by two bolts, one on each end of the U. This is a little different than the description of the defect referred to in Wolfe 10's post.
That failure would have occurred at the connection of the rod to the piston itself. Either way, the result would be similar to what you describe. At the very least, Cummins should give you a sizable discount on any costs if not paying for the entire cost of repairing the engine.
Cummins engines routinely have a 5 year warranty.
The description by Tom Butler fits closer to the pictures that I was shown from the Cummins internal catalog. I am going to ask the shop supervisor if he can print me the pictures. Thanks Brett, I Will Double check on the recall with them, but I suspect there was enough damage internally that many parts have been replaced.
I am going to ask about additional warranty or extended warranty on this new engine. It is fully covered under the 5 year warranty. So my costs are only the additional items I asked them to do for me while the engine was out of the coach body. I did have them replace the air filter while it was out 2 years since the change but checked at each maintenance and I asked them to specifically look at each belt and hose and replace anything that looked the least bit worn.
I am so ready to leave Las Vegas!!! The Rod broke the block" The list of damage goes on for a paragraph. The recall involves faulty emissions systems components that cause the engines to fall out of compliance with federal emissions regulations. The trucks and engines under the voluntary recall have seen degradation of their selective catalytic reduction systems, according to financial reports issued by Cummins.
SCR systems are the exhaust aftertreatment components that use diesel exhaust fluid to curb emissions of nitrogen oxides and greenhouse gases. EPA says that Cummins will contact owners of Cummins engines with information on how to have their engines repaired. Cummins said in those reports that it planned to institute a field campaign to address the issue.
Cummins responded to these queries, but did not provide any insight into the questions asked about the emissions-control systems or the field campaign.

AroundCummins truck engines have been recalled, making it the largest voluntary truck emissions recall ever. Earlier this week the California Air Resources Board CARB issued a report claiming that medium- and heavy-duty Cummins truck engines were producing higher-than-expected emissions levels.
Over time, these systems have been wearing down and becoming less effective. This increases the amount of chemicals like nitrogen oxide being released into the air. When we are Drinking, Eating, and Brething Radiation???
Just Japan alone? Is dumping raw radiation into the Pacific Ocean at a rate of 1 million times greater than the human bean can absorb. The engines are junk. We have 2 one already rebuilt and still causing problems.

Cummins is developing a remedy and will notify International and IC dealers on April The recall is expected to start May Cummins investigated the first case of the fuel heater melting in early February. It became aware of 12 cases of the component melting by the time it decided on March 24 to conduct a recall. So this recall was issued around the same time as the Navistar brake issue?
I thought Navistar made pretty safe vehicles…certainly starting to question that idea.

When you know the ins and outs of your engine system, you can better prepare your marine or generator applications to make functional repairs when necessary. Irwin Miller, a knowledgeable man in business practices. Through the decades, the Cummins brand has integrated itself into a multitude of areas within the diesel industry.
For example, inCummins bought Holset Engineering Co. Cummins also acquired Onan ina company that manufactured generator sets. The name was later changed to Cummins Power Systems. Cummins is an engineering company that has its foot in multiple critical areas of the market. With growing expertise in engine manufacturing, emissions solutions, gensets and parts engineering, Cummins excels in manufacturing products and solutions for marine engines and generators. The original engine in the series was the N14, but over time, it became an obsolete line of engines, as stricter Environmental Protection Agency EPA laws came into play.
Not only has it advanced with quicker processing, but it has also increased fuel efficiency since its debut. The ventilated exhaust lowers the combustion chamber temperature.
It injects urea, which is an active element in diesel exhaust fluid DEFinto the exhaust. Ammonia in the urea chemically reacts with the NOx particles and converts them into nitrogen and water inside the catalytic converter.
DEF reaches high temperatures in the holding tank, then pumps into the injector and decomposition tube, causing it to react to the NOx in the exhaust.
New advancements in emissions technology emerged when Cummins introduced the diesel particulate filter DPF. The system captures the exhaust produced from the combustion chamber and neutralizes the soot through oxidation. The oxidized ash transforms into dust. The ISX had a dual overhead camshaft design.
One cam activated the injectors, and the second initiated the valve train. This complicated injection system was cam actuated to form injection pressure and deliver fuel. The Cummins engine underwent a redesign to meet the EPA standards through developments in the emissions technology. They also innovated the common rail fuel system, which eradicated the need for an injector camshaft to generate pressurized fuel.
In the common rail fuel system, diesel fuel becomes pressurized via multiple piston pumps. The single camshaft improvement creates a better fuel economy and reduces emissions to stay parallel with EPA standards. A Cummins ISX engine is an Inline-6 diesel with a duel-fuel configuration — meaning it can run on diesel or natural gas — although, diesel is the most common. Throughout each improved generation, the ISX engine now has several prominent features that make it one of the most sought-after solutions.
Compared to the original N14 series back in the late s, the ISX now delivers an exceptional line of components that have been engineered and upgraded each year, including:. Recirculation within the engine lowers the combustion temperatures, which reduces optimized MPG and emissions. The first cam creates high-pressure fuel injection for clean power while the second has a set of lobes to operate the integrated engine brake.
The second set of camshafts also moves the intake and exhaust valves.Consent is not a condition of any purchase. You may opt out at any time. International switched to Cummins ISB 6. Calling it the largest voluntary recall of medium- and heavy-duty trucks in history, the EPA announced Tuesday that some half-a-million Cummins diesel engines and trucks powered by those engines have a defective part that causes excessive emissions of nitrogen oxides or NOx.
The recalled engines are equipped with selective catalytic reduction systems SCR which reduce to near zero exhaust emissions of NOx, one of the main components of smog. EPA regulations required heavy-duty trucks to cut NOx emissions starting in prompting most manufacturers to switch to SCR systems for their diesel engines. The EPA said the SCR catalysts that will be replaced through the recall were found to be less durable than required, degrading within a few years instead of controlling NOx pollution for the full useful life of the vehiclemiles or ten years for medium duty, miles or 10 years for heavy duty.
Cummins has pledged to replace the catalysts on all trucks announced in the recall. An earlier recall, involving aboutRam and pickup trucks will bring the total number of vehicles affected to aboutCummins countersued and later, both companies faced a class action lawsuit in federal court over the recall.
